Synopsis:

The film is dedicated to the Cretan lyre, a descendant of the pear-shaped lyre that dominated the Aegean sea and a large part of the mainland, until urbanization and Western influences gradually displaced it and its place was taken by the popular violin. Nowadays it has been limited to some of the Dodecanese, with the exception of Crete, where it still dominates having emerged as the pre-eminent instrument-symbol of the musical tradition of the island.

The film is dedicated to the Cretan lyre, the descendant of the pear-shaped lyre that dominated the Aegean and much of the mainland of Epirus until the urbanization and the western influences gradually displaced it and the folk violin took its place. Nowadays it has been confined to some of the Dodecanese, with the exception of Crete where it still dominates and has become a major symbol of the island's musical tradition.

Director's Biography/Director's Short Bio:

Angelos Kovotsos was born in Athens in May 1954. He studied film directing at the Stavrakos Film School and Economics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He has written and directed over 200 films (with an emphasis on documentary) for film and television. To his credit he has documentary series about Cosmote History (Those who dared, In chordais and organois and At the edge of the Aegean Kastelorizo), but also previously for ERT (Permanent partner of the series Backstage) and the production company "Periplous" (History of my time, Barren line, Antennas of our time , etc.). His films like the Heartfelt, the stone dancing (2012) and the Striggles (2017) have been honored with the audience award at the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival. He teaches documentaries and organizes seminars in universities, film schools, schools and other collective or private bodies. He participated in the Workshop BDC Discoveries 2016 of Creative Europe and at the same time he is a member of the Greek Documentary Association.

He teaches documentary and he organizes seminars in universities, film schools, colleges and other cooperative or private entities. He participated in the Creative Europe BDC Discoveries 2016 Workshop and he is also a member of the Greek Documentary Association.
