Film Club at the School

Educational and training program 2021 - 2022

Watching a motion picture, with the development of technical means, is in danger of losing its social character - the cinema - and turning into something lonely. A film club is called a group whose members have agreed to meet at regular intervals (usually once a month), watch a motion picture and chat. They are connected by love, enthusiasm for cinema and creative discussion around films. The meetings of the club are stable and perhaps the meeting place, if everyone wishes.

The aim is to return to the social character of cinema. The film is presented as the subject of discussion of a group, a group. We reject exclusively personal viewing and silence and we choose collective discussion, in order to come closer to cinema in a dynamic and creative way. The emotions that are born during the viewing are externalized, they are no longer a matter of one, but of a group of people. The viewer is motivated to penetrate his thoughts and express them.

The Cultural Society of Crete - Chania Film Festival of Chania / Chania Film Festival welcomes you to the Educational (for the participating teachers) and Educational (for the participating students) certified Program: "Film Club at school", lasting 300 training hours.

The aim of the action is the creation of film clubs in the school units of primary and secondary education. The aim is to return to the social character of cinema. It is addressed to teachers who wish to organize film clubs in their school.

Teachers participate, every twenty (20) days in face-to-face training sessions. In each session, a film is projected and then the trainees are initiated into the design of actions to approach the film, which are addressed to the age group of the students of the school class and the level in which they teach. Teachers project the film to their students and implement selected activities in the classroom.

The creator and responsible for the implementation of the Program is Stavros Grosdos, scientific associate of the Chania International Film Festival. Teachers-collaborators are animate. The overall coordination is by Matthaios Frantzeskakis, Director of the Chania Film Festival

The necessity of achieving steps of cinematic literacy in Greek primary and secondary education led to the design and implementation of the program with a view to coupling theoretical knowledge and acquiring skills to apply the acquired knowledge.

Objectives of the programme:

The broader objective of the action is to achieve, through the design and operation of a film club at school, steps towards audiovisual literacy, i.e. the acquisition of skills, not only of viewing / consumption (use) but also of critical evaluation of audiovisual products (with the possible creation of visual concepts and the production of visual messages). The activities of the film club will offer opportunities to teachers, students and parents for a sequential transition from the viewing-enjoyment of the film, the spontaneous expression of emotions and description, to the investigation of emotions, the decoding of the creator's intentions, and will lead to expression-creation.

Individual goals for teachers, students, parents:

The cultivation of film education at school.

The ability to watch films that belong to different genres (narrative, documentary, animation, etc.)

The enjoyment of viewing.

The promotion/understanding of the social role of cinema.

The acquisition of techniques/strategies for the selection (critical evaluation) of films as conscious viewers.

The knowledge and approach of tools/means, the technology of cinema and its implications.

The acquaintance with the methods and techniques with which the film product is produced.

The development of a critical attitude (study-research) towards film products (expressive conventions and optical media).

The approach of social issues through films.

The use of audiovisual tools for the development of personal expression skills.

Interdisciplinary approaches/encounters with scientific fields, such as photography, visual image, music, movement, literature, creative writing.

Particular aim for teachers:

The acquisition of skills in the design of cinematic literacy activities and their implementation either in the school or in the context of informal education.

Theprogramme, in terms of its educational dimension,is distinguished inperson or in a modern distance. As for its educational dimension (implementation of activities in the classroom), it presupposes face-to-face teaching of the participants.

The training steps:

(a) The participating teachers participate, every twenty (20) days in a face-to-face or distance training session. In each session, a film is projected and then the trainees are initiated in the design of actions approaching the film, which are addressed to the age group of the students of the school class and the level in which they teach. Teamwork design actions addressed to students The proposed actions to approach the film are recorded in tabs in electronic form and posted on the relevant electronic platform, which is accessible to the participating teachers. During a school year, participants have access - through the platform - to eight (8) films and the corresponding approach tabs of the film.

(b) Teachers project one film – every 20 days – to their students and implement selected activities in the classroom, which they retrieve from the asynchronous communication platform.

In total, during a training year, eight (8) face-to-face or distance training sessions are implemented and each teacher implements eight (8) workshops in the classroom with his/her students.

(c)The teacher, after completingthe implementationof the workshop in the classroom (projection ofa film and implementation of selected activities), is invited to post theelectronic deliverable work the content of which stems from the implementation of the action in the classroom.

At the end of the training sessions and the implementation of the workshops, the trainee is invited to post

a final

work, which is evaluated by the trainer
