In the context of the celebrations of the 200 years since the Revolution of 1821, the Region of Crete – Regional Unit of Chania, the Municipality of Chania, the CFSP – KAM, the International Society of Friends of Nikos Kazantzakis / Department of Chania, the Committee of the Regional Unit of Chania “CHANIA 1821 – 2021”, the Cultural Society of Crete and the Chania Film Festival, with the support of the Greek National Tourism Organization, are organizing the exhibition entitled “GREECE. Travelling…” and content of selected posters of the Greek National Tourism Organization from the creation of the Organization until 2009.
The efforts to promote tourism in Greece began in 1926, and officially, under the care of Eleftherios Venizelos, in 1929 the Greek Office of Tourism was established, which the following year was renamed the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO). The 1st poster of tourist promotion of Greece was released in 1929 and depicts the Propylaea of the Acropolis. The photo is by the famous photographer Nelly’s.
Lefteris Lambrakis, a collector of posters of various themes, is in possession of posters of the Greek National Tourism Organization, covering the years from 1926 – the first entries – until 2009, the year when the Greek National Tourism Organization began to use modern social media for its promotion. The posters are of particular interest. Apart from the fact that many of them have been created by world-renowned artists, such as Moralis, Vassiliou and others, it is interesting to note the fact that the aesthetics of the posters change over time and, by extension, the different look adopted for the promotion of Greece.
The exhibition, curated by Lefteris Lambrakis and Maria Michelogianni, will take place at the Kam, from Wednesday, August 11, 2021 until Sunday, September 12, 2021. Opening Hours: 10.00 a.m. – 2.00 p.m. & 7.00 p.m. – 11.00 p.m.
Admission is free to the public.
