Three leading Greek Artists narrate the Greek Myth to the ends of the world
"So let's give him our blood to come alive. Let's do what we can live a little longer this exquisite eater, drinker, laborer, womanizer and bum. The widest soul, the surest body, the weakest cry I have ever known in my life", wrote Nikos Kazantzakis for his friend, George Zorba. So he made him a novel, Cacoyannis brought him to life on the sail and Theodorakis designed his musical figures, giving him all three eternity...
Zorba the Greek is a Cinematic Myth, "crowned" with a syrtaki that became the soundtrack of our country internationally, in one of the most resilient advertising campaigns that remains alive for more than five decades now!!!
A myth film and a music that enjoys worldwide recognition, symbolizing Greece itself. It became a landmark for our country, but also for Mikis Theodorakis himself, who has stated in a television interview that thanks to the soundtrack of the film he became known to the ends of the world.
This that Greeks and foreigners saw and loved in the film were the authenticity of the Greek Zorba, his madness, his freedom and his attitude in the face of life and death. People loved Kazantzakis' Zorba. She loved her blue and white Greece, through the black and white frames of the film.
And of course he loved the syrtaki, the main musical theme of the film. Even today it is a tourist symbol, a musical background that accompanies our country abroad. The soundtrack of the film has sold over fifty million records and has made countless covers.
The official premiere of the film Zorba the Greek, took place at the Theatre des Champs – Elysses, in Paris, on March 3, 1965.
